Meet Heather Zink - Roller Derby

New derby fans of all ages can meet with Heather Zink (RCR SuperFan, Mom of Derby Girl/Ref “Knock’em Dead Red” and Wife of Ref “Mac the Knife”) for a pre-bout drink (optional) and learn a little about roller derby. We will meet at 4:30pm at the Muddy Rudder Pub located at 8105 SE 7th Ave in Portland, and then head over to the Hangar at Oaks Park at 5pm.

When:  Saturday, March 27th.  Bout starts at 6pm. Doors open at 5pm.

Where: The Muddy Rudder Pub and then the Hangar at Oaks Park (next to skating rink), Sellwood area, Portland OR

Why: The Rose City Rollers are women of attitude, athleticism and passion, playing a hard-hitting sport of speed and skill. DerbyNewsNetwork (www.derbynewsnetwork.com) ranks, Portland’s own team, the Rose City Rollers 8th in the nation of the top 25 flat track roller derby leagues (early 2010).

Capitol Pride 2010 Meeting - 5:00 PM - Southside Speakeasy - Everyone Welcome....Wed. Mar. 17th

Capitol Pride needs volunteers, so please attend the meetings if you are interested in helping. Also, does anyone know about local bands, signing groups, etc.. who would be willing to perform free or at an inexpensive price at Capitol Pride?

Also need someone who can face paint children and someone who can make balloon animals, etc.. for children. 

Anyone know of a local company that would rent and set up staging and sound equipment on a Saturday?

Oscars Party at Southside Speakeasy - Salem

An Evening With the Oscars on Sunday, March 7th at Southside Speakeasy in Salem, in memory of Carole Fewx...LONG time supporter of the Salem GLBT community who's life was taken tragically a couple years ago. Carole worked very hard to put this annual event on for charity and it is being continued in her honor by her friends and family. Doors @ 3:30pm, Festivities @ 5:30pm. No cover!  $5 entry fee for best Oscar picks contest (prizes for the top 2 winners). Auction & raffle benefiting Friends of The Salem Public Library. You can also bring books to donate to the thrift (books) shop the group runs.  They are having a big sale March 14th, 15th, & 16th.

 

Watch the Oscars on the big screen! An evening of movies, glamour and wonderful memories. Donation of raffle and auction items are still needed. Some people have stated they usually do not watch the Oscars, but will stop by to drop off a donation or to visit and remember Carole. I know Carole's son is coming and I think her daughter will be there.

Hello from the Darkside Cinema in Corvallis!

I wanted to let everyone know about an award-winning documentary we are opening this Friday, March 5th, at the Darkside. It's called PRODIGAL SONS. It deals with the family dynamics of the transgendered filmmaker, with particular focus on the sister-brother-mother relationships, and has been winning film festival awards around the country.

Marie Clements, is an award-winning writer, performer, filmmaker and founding artistic director of Urban Ink Productions.  A Métis playwright from British Columbia, her plays Age of Iron, now look what you made me do, the Unnatural and Accidental Women, Urban Tattoo, and Copper Thunderbird have been produced in the U.S. and Canada, as well as published in anthologies such as Keepers of the Morning Star: An Anthology of Native Women's Theater, and Staging Coyote's Dream: an Anthology of First Nations Drama. Burning Vision was commissioned by the Rumble Theatre of Vancouver, B.C. and developed with Playwrights Workshop Montreal.  Her play The Unnatural and Accidental Women has been adapted for the British Columbia Film Commission.

Oregon's Hate Crime Laws Discussion

Many of you have read the recent Gazette-Times accounts of Corvallis teens targeting and assaulting homeless persons, including an accusation that one such assault centered on the victim’s sexual orientation. These accusations were later withdrawn, but they brought to light some interesting and little known facts about Oregon’s hate crime laws and how they are defined and applied.

 

Please join the OSU Pride Center, Basic Rights Action Team, PRIDE Corvallis, and the OSU Office of LGBT Outreach & Services for a discussion of Oregon’s hate crime laws featuring Benton County District Attorney, John Haroldson.

 

This event will be held at the OSU Pride Center (1553 SW 'A' Avenue, Corvallis OR 97331, 541.737.9161), Sunday, March 7, 2010, at 6:00 p.m.

Hello from Margy at Lesbian Connection magazine!  I’m trying to get the word out to lesbians everywhere about our FREE magazine.  In case you haven’t heard of LC before, or if you just lost touch with us, here’s some info:

Lesbian Connection is the free worldwide forum of news, ideas, and information for, by, and about lesbians.  We’ve been publishing since 1974, and we mail issues out every other month in plain brown envelopes (the word “lesbian” doesn’t appear anywhere on the outside).

This magazine is a grassroots forum, which means it’s truly written by our readers.  On its pages you’ll find info for lesbians on places to live and where to travel, lesbian B&Bs and guesthouses, websites, cruises, festivals, conferences, lesbian land and retirement communities, products (books, CDs, DVDs, etc.), campgrounds and retreats, lesbian lawyers and realtors, as well as the comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” and much more.  There are also reviews, articles, and letters dealing with whatever issues LC’s readers are talking about, from “The L Word” to health issues, relationships, and politics.
