It's an absolute travesty -- and a tragedy -- that Senate Republicans blocked the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" from even receiving
an up-or-down vote.
But, as we told you on Tuesday, this fight is far from over. The bill will likely come back up for a vote after the November elections and, together with you, we'll fight like hell to win.
Lives are at stake. Waiting is not an option. That's why we are joining the Human Rights Campaign in an urgent campaign that could change history -- a move the New York Times is now supporting as well. As you may know, a federal district court recently ruled that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is unconstitutional.
Now, Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department have a choice: fight the decision or let it stand. If they choose not to appeal the ruling, it will move "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" one step closer to the dustbin of history.
You can tell Attorney General Eric Holder not to defend "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" right now. Click here to sign your name to an open letter from HRC and Courage asking the Justice Department NOT to appeal the historic federal court decision that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is unconstitutional:
http://www.couragecampaign.org/DontDefendDADTHere's what the
New York Times had to say in an editorial on Wednesday:
"If the military's unjust policy is not repealed in the lame-duck session, there is another way out. The Obama administration can choose not to appeal Judge Phillips's ruling that the policy is unconstitutional, and simply stop ejecting soldiers."
If Attorney General Eric Holder takes leadership, he can help the Obama Administration make history, joining a federal court in the judgement that discrimination -- especially against those willing to take a bullet for their country -- is un-American.
We've faced setbacks before, but history and nearly 80% of Americans are on our side. We need Attorney General Holder to get the message. Join with Courage and HRC and add your name to our open letter. Then ask five friends to join you today. There's not much time:
http://www.couragecampaign.org/DontDefendDADTTogether, we will end this discrimination in our nation's military once and for all. Thank you.
